    The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Dealt” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

    Winner of the SXSW Audience Award for Documentary Feature, “Dealt” is the inspiring story of 62-year-old Richard Turner, who is renowned as one of the world’s greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind.

    The SFA Alumni Invitational Showcase runs from Jan. 22 through May 4 in Griffith Fine Art Gallery on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. Curated by Jeffery Brewer, assistant professor of art (sculpture) in the School of Art, the exhibition features works by former SFA art students. The artists have been invited to discuss their work from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in Griffith Gallery. The discussion will be followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House. Free admission.

    The exhibition “Caddo Contemporary: Present and Relevant” will show Jan. 24 through March 24 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

    Featuring ceramics, paintings, beadwork, stonework and drawings, the exhibition is a collaborative presentation of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Art Galleries and the Caddo Mound Historic Site in Alto. An opening reception with the artists in attendance is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

One of the top 10 black dance companies in the U.S., Step Afrika! connects this tradition to thrilling Zulu and South African dance forms and blends exhilarating styles such as tap and hip hop into its internationally acclaimed performances. The Washington Post says Step Afrika! “has elevated stepping to high art.”

    Duo Karudan includes Christoper Ayer, professor of clarinet in the SFA School of Music, and his wife, Kae Hosoda-Ayer, who is associate professor of piano at Baylor University. They will perform five pieces for clarinet and piano, all written by Canadian composers.
